The REAL WWII German Heroes

A series of illustrations celebrating German WWII heroes. The series consists of 26 portraits of German individuals who, during World War II and the Holocaust, either dared to object to the regime, helped those who suffered or inspired us. The images feature brief descriptions of the person's heroism, a link to additional information and movies related to that person.

The series is intended to encourage (young) Germans to learn more about World War II and the Holocaust. The objective is to present the horrific era through positive engagement, as most audiences have experienced peaceful life, seek pleasure in their daily life and prefer positive experiences.

Presenting cheerful illustrations of German WWII heroes, the heroes' stories can teach the horrors of the time, yet highlight the good in people, give hope and inspire audiences.

The illustrated German WWII heroes not only present inspiring stories, they also raise educational questions such as: What is a hero? Do we think these individuals should be portrayed as heroes, and if so, why? What would we have done in their place? How would we behave in a similar social and political environment?

This illustration series can be presented as an art exhibition, postcard bundle and booklet suitable for museums and high school classrooms.
